The history behind St. Leonard's Dental Practice

Our practice has a rich heritage spanning over a century, rooted in a deep commitment to exceptional dental care. It all began in 1915 when William Selley, the great-grandfather of Charles and Amelia Pidgeon, trained as an apprentice in a dental surgery on Sidwell Street, Exeter. At the time, formal qualifications for dentistry were not required, and he became part of the pioneering generation of pre-1923 dentists.

His son, Wilfred Selley, pursued formal dental training at Guy’s Hospital before serving in the Royal Army Dental Corps. In 1951, he returned to Exeter to join his father’s practice while also working in Oral Surgery at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.

In 1960, due to the redevelopment of Sidwell Street, the practice relocated to its current home at 27 Denmark Road. The family tradition continued when Clive and Elizabeth Pidgeon (née Selley), both graduates of Guy’s Hospital, joined the practice in 1985. Shortly after, Wilfred Selley retired, passing the legacy to the next generation.

Today, the practice remains in the family, proudly owned and run by Dr Charles Pidgeon, who trained at Guy’s Hospital (2014), alongside his sister, Dr Amelia Pidgeon, a Cardiff University graduate (2021).
With four generations of dedicated dental professionals, our practice stands as a rare and enduring family-run establishment, serving the Exeter and the surrounding community with the same passion and commitment since 1915.
