Dental Examinations
We understand that visiting the dentist can feel daunting for some patients, so our aim is to make your examination appointment as relaxed, thorough and informative as possible. We even professionally clean (scale) your teeth as part of our routine examinations!
A Warm Welcome
From the moment you arrive, our friendly team will ensure you feel comfortable and at ease. If you are a new patient, we will take your medical history and discuss any concerns or goals you may have for your smile.

Included: A Simple Scale
As part of your examination at St Leonard’s Dental, we include a gentle, simple scale to remove light surface deposits and plaque build-up. This is not routinely included as part of a dental examination, but we believe it plays an important role in maintaining gum health and supporting preventative care.
If we identify signs of more advanced gum disease or feel that more comprehensive periodontal treatment would be beneficial, we will discuss this with you and arrange an appointment with our experienced in-house hygienist for dedicated care.
Discussion and Personalised Advice
Following your examination, we will explain our findings clearly and answer any questions you may have. If treatment is recommended, we will outline your options, costs and timescales so you can make an informed decision.
We also provide tailored preventative advice, including oral hygiene guidance, dietary recommendations and tips to help you maintain long-term dental health.
Your Ongoing Care
Our focus is not only on treating problems, but on preventing them. Together, we will agree a recall schedule that suits your individual needs and risk profile, ensuring your smile remains healthy and confident for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have a dental examination?
Most patients benefit from a check-up every 6 months, but this can vary depending on your oral health. We will recommend a personalised recall interval.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Yes. We use low-dose digital X-rays only when clinically necessary, ensuring minimal exposure while providing valuable diagnostic information. Ask your dentist about dental radiation doses compared with normal background radiation or a flight!
What if I’m nervous about visiting the dentist?
You’re not alone. We take extra time with nervous patients, explaining everything clearly and working at your pace.
Will I always need treatment after an examination?
Not necessarily. Many visits are preventative, helping us identify and manage issues early before treatment is needed.
